Sunburn, photographed 2 days after a 5-hour su...

The simplest and cheapest way to keep your skin healthy and young looking is to stay out of the sun. Sunlight is a major cause of the skin changes we think of as aging ? changes such as wrinkles, dryness, and age spots. Your skin does change with age. For example, you sweat less, leading to
increased dryness. As your skin ages, it becomes thinner and loses fat, so it looks less plump and smooth. It’s never too late to protect yourself from
the harmful effects of the sun. People who smoke tend to have more wrinkles than nonsmokers of the same age, complexion, and history of sun
exposure. It may be because smoking also plays a role in damaging ELASTIN proteins. Facial wrinkling increases with the amount of cigarettes
and number of years a person has smoked.

Some people say that sunscreen is all you need for anti aging skin care. In fact they claim that this is the only product that works, but if you believe that then the words pigs and fly come to mind. While it is true that the sun is one of the main causes of damage to your skin, it takes more than sunscreen to retain that smooth and youthful complexion.

In fact anti aging skin care involves more than just the creams and lotions you use, but is rather part of your general healthy living routine. Apart from excessive exposure to the sun the other major cause of skin damage is smoking cigarettes. So quit the habit and both your skin and your general
health will benefit.

Of course creams and moisturizers are an essential part of an anti aging skin care regime and products for use during the day will include a sunscreen as
one of the ingredients. But when it comes to preventing those wrinkles and fine lines you need to find a cream that contains natural ingredients that have been scientifically proved to be effective.

So it’s obvious that you need more than sunscreen for your anti aging skin care. You can find a full explanation of the ingredients to look for and why
they are important by following this link.

Grape seeds in Nr.
Image via Wikipedia

This is the second in the series about ingredients used in natural skincare products. As its name suggests grapeseed oil is a substance that is produced from the seeds of grapes. The oil has many uses, but this post concentrates on its use in anti aging skin care products.

Grapeseed oil like grape juice and red wine contains several antioxidants which are effective in neutralizing free radicals. Pollution, radiation and cigarette smoke all lead to the production of free radicals which, if left unchecked, can lead to cell and tissue damage which results in lines and wrinkles and loss of skin tone.

In addition grapeseed oil possesses regenerative qualities which helps to keep the skin properly moisturized. It is especially effective for repair of the skin around the eyes. The oil has also been shown to reduce the appearance of stretch marks.

Grapeseed oil is rich in linoleic acid and it also contains natural vitamin E making it an essential ingredient of many anti aging skincare products.

When you ask how to get rid of forehead lines you will receive a number of different answers depending on who is providing the information. For instance if you ask a doctor about your deep forehead lines, the prescription is likely to be an injection of Botox or the newer Dysport.

Ask a plastic surgeon and a Forehead or Browlift may be the recommended way to deal with those forehead frown lines. If that sounds too drastic then fillers or volumizing are other alternatives.

Prevention is better than cure claims another, so avoid the three ssses – Sun, Smoke and Stress. To which is added alcohol which dehydrates and adds toxins to your system.

Using some simple exercise techniques you can do in front of the bathroom mirror you can strengthen your facial muscles to smooth out those deep forehead lines and saggy cheeks according to Marja Putkisto the originator of the Method Putkisto.

And then there is the gentler approach of using creams and lotions made from natural ingredients which help to promote the production of collagen and elastin and so restore your skin’s smooth and firm appearance.

So there are several different ways to get rid of forehead lines. Botox and fillers produce instant results, but you have to repeat the treatment on a regular basis to preserve the effect. Cosmetic surgery may produce a longer lasting effect, but even this often has to be repeated. The exercise method sounds ideal, but some have doubted its effectiveness. Creams and lotions will not produce instant results, but using a skin care product with the correct ingredients is the natural way to get rid of forehead lines.

We all know that eating sensibly is good for our health, but we may not appreciate the importance of food for healthy skin. Just as the eating of junk food leads to putting on weight, these same foods can affect our complexion leading in extreme cases to acne and the appearance of spots and pimples.

Following a healthy diet means eating plenty of fruit and vegetables with lean meat and fish. Avoid fatty foods particularly those that have been fried. Drink plenty of water to wash out the toxins from your system, but cut down on coffee and alcohol. This recipe for a healthy body is the same as food for healthy skin.

Honey bee on Geraldton Wax Flower, NSW, Australia
Image via Wikipedia

Throughout this blog I have stressed the importance of the ingredients contained in skin care products. I am planning to make a series of posts covering individual compounds and active manuka honey is the first.

So what is manuka honey and why is it described as active? The honey is produced by honey bees who have collected pollen from the manuka bush which is only found in New Zealand. This type of honey has been tested by scientists from the Waikato University in New Zealand. They have discovered that manuka honey has superior antibacterial properties which are not found in other types of honey.

Although all manuka honey has these special qualities, the potency of each batch does vary since the bees will often collect pollen from other flowers as well as the manuka bushes. The scientists have devised a UMF rating to measure the strength of the antibacterial effect. A honey has to have a rating of 10 to allow it to be described as “active”.

So there you have it – active manuka honey is one that has scientifically proven antibacterial properties and is an essential ingredient of the best skin care products.

As with many things in life prevention is better than cure and this is certainly the case when considering how to minimize wrinkles. The appearance of lines and wrinkles on our faces is part of the natural process of aging. Although we cannot stop the passing of the years, there are steps we can take to delay the onset of these signs of aging.

It’s common knowledge that the major causes of damage to the skin are excessive exposure to the sun and smoking cigarettes. So the first step we should take to minimize wrinkles is to take sensible precautions when out in the sun and to quit smoking.

In addition you should follow a daily skincare routine using creams and lotions to keep your skin moisturized. The skin care products that I recommend are those made from natural ingredients such as Xtend-TK. To find out more take a look at this page on the main site.

I just found this video that explains far better than I can why using skin care products that include collagen are a waste of time. What you need are products that contain ingredients that encourage your body to produce extra collagen itself, such as Xtend-TK and CO Q10.

To understand why collagen stimulation is important you need to know what collagen is and the effect it has on the condition of our skin.
Collagen is a protein that keeps our skin firm and smooth. This protein is produced naturally by our bodies, but as we age the production of collagen starts to decline. As a result our skin begins to lose its firm tone and lines and wrinkles start to appear.

Certain substances encourage collagen stimulation and as the amount of collagen increases so the firm skin tone that we enjoyed in our twenties begins to return. Two natural substances that are responsible for collagen stimulation are Xtend-TK and Phytessence Wakame.
