Writing in the Pittsburgh Makeup Examiner Patty Bell has ten tips which she calls her “Golden Rules of Makeup”. What interested me was that her Rule number 3 is Moisturize EVERYTHING! And this is followed by “Stay out of the sun and tanning beds -period”. This is all good skin care advice that you will have read here before. After some specific makeup tips she adds as Rule number 9 “Get yourself on a good skin care routine” because as she says “Good skin is the perfect canvas to the best makeup application”.

Is Skin Care For Men A Taboo Subject?

I’ve just found this article by Aparna Karthikeyan who takes a light hearted look at the way men view skin care.

“Look, I do not, as a rule, e-mail men and ask them what they like to do in the bathroom ? but, trust me, I did it only because of a recent tragic incident? A dear old friend went to a wedding all sunshine and smiles, but came back a broken man. Several people there had complimented him on his pretty daughter. And when, through clenched teeth, he explained it was his wife, a few men dug him in the ribs and said wasn’t he a lucky thing, married to this stunner half his age! Naturally, the friend was gutted? the wife was merely a few months his junior, but managed to knock decades off ? thanks partly to dewy good looks, but mostly to timely cosmetic interventions!”

Should Skin Care Products Include Sunscreen?

Or to put the question the other way round “Why do all skincare products not contain a high SPF sunscreen?”. We are always being told that the main causes of damage to our skin are smoking and excessive exposure to the sun. So it obviously makes sense for sunscreen to be included in the skin care products that we use. Doesn’t it?

Well, it turns our that the answer is no, it does not. The reason is that what causes the skin damage is excessive exposure to the sun. The operative word is excessive by which is meant spending long periods outside in a hot summer sun. For the average person who works in an office building there is clearly no need for protection and using a sunscreen fulltime can actually be harmful.

Vitamin D is one of the essential requirements of a healthy body and the best source of this vitamin is sunlight. So walking in the sunshine is beneficial so long as the exposure is not excessive. In addition there are concerns that certain chemicals used in the manufacture of suncreams can be harmful so it makes sense to restrict their use to the times when you are outside in a strong sun.

So you can see that there is no need to include a sunscreen in skin care moisturizers and lotions. In fact it would be counter productive since it would block the natural way of acquiring vitamin D from sunlight.

I was wondering if there was a thing such as anti aging oil that will make my skin beautiful again. I hate my rough, old skin, and I could really use something like an anti aging oil. I just found this query on a Health blog, but there is no answer. My answer would be that of course there are many anti aging skin care products that can improve your appearance and reduce those lines and wrinkles. The problem most people have is knowing how to choose a product that is really effective and will do what it promises.

I noticed today that the old rhyme about An Apple a Day has now been reinvented to promote a product based on “apple stem cells”. “The latest buzz in skincare is a rare Swiss Apple called the Uttwiler Spatlauber. This “Super Apple” is so rare that only 20 trees are in existence. Researchers noted that when these super apples were punctured they healed themselves. They also boast an extremely long shelf life; they last 4 months longer than typical shriveled apples. This rare Swiss Apple has a self-renewal power that rejuvenates aging, saggy skin. Apple stem cells are rich in epigenetic factors and metabolites that assure the longevity of skin cells”.

While I have no inside knowledge of this product, I applaud the use of natural ingredients which I feel are always to be preferred over those made from chemicals. The skin care products that I recommend are made by the Xtend-Life Company which uses all natural ingredients in its creams and lotions.

I found this short article about Japanese Skincare – “4 Ways To Help Your Skin Look Great”. Top of the list comes diet and exercise pointing out that rice forms a large part of the Japanese diet. Second is a slower lifestyle which results in less stress and so promotes good health. Then there is an emphasis on natural skin care remedies which is something that I have often mentioned here before. The Fourth Way turns out to be an ingredient I have discussed many times – Phytessence Wakame the Japanese sea kelp which helps to build up hyaluronic acid in the skin. Founder of Sumbody, Deborah Burnes is a trained cosmetologist and so an expert on the ingredients that are used in the manufacture of skincare products. Her recently released book “Look Great, Live Green” includes information on how to understand the labels on the products we buy. Many products which claim to be “natural” and “organic” are what she calls Vitamin J – junky and contain dangerous chemicals which she believes are potentially poisonous and polluting the planet.

If you have read previous posts you will recognize two of the examples she quotes “Parabens, used as preservatives in many products, are being tested for possible cancer-causing effects, and phthalates, commonly found in fragrance and linked to hormone disruption”.
