As we all know the answer is a definite yes. Someone who has smoked for several years is instantly recognizable by their sallow complexion and wrinkled skin. The efeect on the skin is often apparent after only ten years as a smoker and is irreversible.

There are a number of reasons why smoking leads to wrinkles. The blood vessels in the top layer of your skin are narrowed as a result of smoking cigarettes. This reduces the blood flow to your skin, depriving it of oxygen and important nutrients, such as vitamin A. In addition the collagen and elastin fibers which keep your skin firm and smooth are damaged by smoking. This leads to sagging skin and premature wrinkles.

Damage is also caused by the heat from burning cigarettes. In the same way that constant frowning can lead to a wrinkled forehead, pursing your lips when inhaling and squinting your eyes to keep out smoke will have the same effect in other areas of your face.

And it’s not only your face that is affected by the habit. A recent study found that smoking can cause increased wrinkling and skin damage to other areas of your body including the inner arms.
