Male age spots are sometimes called liver spots and so the question is sometimes asked whether they are a sign of liver disease. In fact these spots have nothing to do with the liver and so do not indicate a problem in this direction. The correct name for liver spots is age spots or, if you want to be technical, photoaging spots. Typically they appear as light to dark brown patches on the hands and face as well as the legs and feet. The spots have rounded edges, sometimes appearing singly or in groups like large freckles. There are two known causes of these age spots, excessive exposure to the sun and an inherited tendency to form them.

As with general skin care the best way to prevent the appearance of age spots is to protect yourself from the sun by wearing appropriate clothing and using an effective sunscreen. In the case of hereditary age spots there are no effective preventive measures you can take, although the spots can be removed by the various methods described in other posts. Age spots are not cancerous or precancerous, but spots with uneven rather than rounded edges could be melanoma and should be checked by your doctor.
