Assorted cosmetics and tools
Image via Wikipedia

As someone who takes a keen interest in skin care I naturally keep an eye on items in the news. Over the weekend I came across this piece:

“Lead on my lips and mercury on my eyelashes, carcinogenic and endocrine disruptive creams on my skin. We have a long history of doing dangerous things in the name of beauty. The Egyptians applied copper for skin tone, Romans used chalk. In the Middle Ages, Europeans covered faces with arsenic-laced powder and leaches to whiten skin. The EU has banned 1,110-plus ingredients in cosmetics, compared to only 10 in the US. With one-third of the products on shelves containing an ingredient linked to cancer, why do “beauty” companies continue to slather our faces and bodies with chemicals in the name of healthy skin?”

And further on I read:

“As one of 600 companies that signed the Compact for Safe Cosmetics, this body and cosmetic collection is vegan-friendly and doesn’t test on animals. There are no phthalates, parabens or artificial fragrance. It specializes in bioactive ingredients that have a “therapeutic effect on living tissue,” like magnolia which is an anti-inflammatory and pumpkin which acts as an anti-oxidant.”

This sounds just like Xtend-Life although it is in fact one of the other 600 companies mentioned above.

I found this short article about Japanese Skincare – “4 Ways To Help Your Skin Look Great”. Top of the list comes diet and exercise pointing out that rice forms a large part of the Japanese diet. Second is a slower lifestyle which results in less stress and so promotes good health. Then there is an emphasis on natural skin care remedies which is something that I have often mentioned here before. The Fourth Way turns out to be an ingredient I have discussed many times – Phytessence Wakame the Japanese sea kelp which helps to build up hyaluronic acid in the skin. You can read the whole article here.

When you ask how to get rid of forehead lines you will receive a number of different answers depending on who is providing the information. For instance if you ask a doctor about your deep forehead lines, the prescription is likely to be an injection of Botox or the newer Dysport.

Ask a plastic surgeon and a Forehead or Browlift may be the recommended way to deal with those forehead frown lines. If that sounds too drastic then fillers or volumizing are other alternatives.

Prevention is better than cure claims another, so avoid the three ssses – Sun, Smoke and Stress. To which is added alcohol which dehydrates and adds toxins to your system.

Using some simple exercise techniques you can do in front of the bathroom mirror you can strengthen your facial muscles to smooth out those deep forehead lines and saggy cheeks according to Marja Putkisto the originator of the Method Putkisto.

And then there is the gentler approach of using creams and lotions made from natural ingredients which help to promote the production of collagen and elastin and so restore your skin’s smooth and firm appearance.

So there are several different ways to get rid of forehead lines. Botox and fillers produce instant results, but you have to repeat the treatment on a regular basis to preserve the effect. Cosmetic surgery may produce a longer lasting effect, but even this often has to be repeated. The exercise method sounds ideal, but some have doubted its effectiveness. Creams and lotions will not produce instant results, but using a skin care product with the correct ingredients is the natural way to get rid of forehead lines.

We all know that eating sensibly is good for our health, but we may not appreciate the importance of food for healthy skin. Just as the eating of junk food leads to putting on weight, these same foods can affect our complexion leading in extreme cases to acne and the appearance of spots and pimples.

Following a healthy diet means eating plenty of fruit and vegetables with lean meat and fish. Avoid fatty foods particularly those that have been fried. Drink plenty of water to wash out the toxins from your system, but cut down on coffee and alcohol. This recipe for a healthy body is the same as food for healthy skin.

Honey bee on Geraldton Wax Flower, NSW, Australia
Image via Wikipedia

Throughout this blog I have stressed the importance of the ingredients contained in skin care products. I am planning to make a series of posts covering individual compounds and active manuka honey is the first.

So what is manuka honey and why is it described as active? The honey is produced by honey bees who have collected pollen from the manuka bush which is only found in New Zealand. This type of honey has been tested by scientists from the Waikato University in New Zealand. They have discovered that manuka honey has superior antibacterial properties which are not found in other types of honey.

Although all manuka honey has these special qualities, the potency of each batch does vary since the bees will often collect pollen from other flowers as well as the manuka bushes. The scientists have devised a UMF rating to measure the strength of the antibacterial effect. A honey has to have a rating of 10 to allow it to be described as “active”.

So there you have it – active manuka honey is one that has scientifically proven antibacterial properties and is an essential ingredient of the best skin care products.

There are many ways to clear wrinkles from your face. Cosmetic surgery may be the answer for some, but the procedures are costly and there can be complications. BOTOX? injections are a less expensive way to clear wrinkles from your forehead, but they are not cheap. And the cure is only temporary so you have to repeat the treatment at regular intervals. In addition the treatment can result in unwelcome side effects including headaches, nausea and respiratory infections.

But is it really possible to clear wrinkles using natural skin care products? You may have tried various creams and lotions and been disappointed with the results. The key to a skin care product that will produce visible and long lasting results is its ingredients. Scientific research has shown that Xtend-TK and Coenzyme Q10 are substances that stimulate the production of collagen and elastin which are proteins in our skin that keeps it looking firm and smooth. So if you want to clear wrinkles the natural way, look out for these ingredients in your skin care products.

A natural moisturizer is a product that uses natural ingredients. Many moisturizing creams and lotions contain chemicals such as mineral oils and alcohols which can do more harm than good. For instance alcohols such as ethanol or methanol can cause dryness and irritation which is the opposite of what you want from a moisturizer.

Creams that are made from natural ingredients will not have these adverse side effects and so are suitable for all skin types. Avocado oil acts as a particularly effective natural moisturizer and also a powerful anti oxidant which destroys free radicals.

Macadamia oil, Allantoin and Xtend-TK are other natural ingredients to look out for when you are choosing a natural moisturizer

Fresh vegetables are common in a healthy diet.
Image via Wikipedia

Let’s face it, if everyone knew the secrets of beautiful skin, we would all have the perfect complexion of our dreams. Or would we? Of course not. You see there is a difference between knowing the secrets of beautiful skin and applying that knowledge to achieve what we desire. Take a simple example – sunbathing. It’s no secret that the UV rays in sunlight are the major cause of damage to our skin. Spending too much time in the sun without adequate protection is the surest way to ending up looking like a wrinkly old prune. But sunbathing is a pleasureable activity and it’s all too easy to overlook the dangers when we are enjoying ourselves. So let’s not waste our time searching for the secrets of beautiful skin, but rather concentrate on practical steps like protection from the sun and eating a healthy and balanced diet.

Kelp Forest

The techniques of Japanese skincare should be of great interest to us in the west. Why? Because Japanese women are renowned for their perfect skin. As with many things in the east, Japanese skincare has been practised for hundreds of years using natural plants, clays and oils to cleanse and
moisturize their bodies.

Skin care is not just about creams and lotions, but
you also need to follow a healthy diet. And the
Japanese diet is no exception consisting mainly of rice, fish and vegetables. A favorite food is a form of seaweed which grows in the Sea of Japan known as wakame kelp. In recent years an extract from this kelp known as phytessence wakame has been found to have properties which make it an essential element of an effective skin cream.

There are many things that we in the west can learn from the ancient wisdom of the east and Japanese skincare is just one.
