]]>As someone who takes a keen interest in skin care I naturally keep an eye on items in the news. Over the weekend I came across this piece:
“Lead on my lips and mercury on my eyelashes, carcinogenic and endocrine disruptive creams on my skin. We have a long history of doing dangerous things in the name of beauty. The Egyptians applied copper for skin tone, Romans used chalk. In the Middle Ages, Europeans covered faces with arsenic-laced powder and leaches to whiten skin. The EU has banned 1,110-plus ingredients in cosmetics, compared to only 10 in the US. With one-third of the products on shelves containing an ingredient linked to cancer, why do “beauty” companies continue to slather our faces and bodies with chemicals in the name of healthy skin?”
And further on I read:
“As one of 600 companies that signed the Compact for Safe Cosmetics, this body and cosmetic collection is vegan-friendly and doesn’t test on animals. There are no phthalates, parabens or artificial fragrance. It specializes in bioactive ingredients that have a “therapeutic effect on living tissue,” like magnolia which is an anti-inflammatory and pumpkin which acts as an anti-oxidant.”
This sounds just like Xtend-Life although it is in fact one of the other 600 companies mentioned above.

]]>I noticed today that the old rhyme about An Apple a Day has now been reinvented to promote a product based on “apple stem cells”. “The latest buzz in skincare is a rare Swiss Apple called the Uttwiler Spatlauber. This “Super Apple” is so rare that only 20 trees are in existence. Researchers noted that when these super apples were punctured they healed themselves. They also boast an extremely long shelf life; they last 4 months longer than typical shriveled apples. This rare Swiss Apple has a self-renewal power that rejuvenates aging, saggy skin. Apple stem cells are rich in epigenetic factors and metabolites that assure the longevity of skin cells”.
While I have no inside knowledge of this product, I applaud the use of natural ingredients which I feel are always to be preferred over those made from chemicals. The skin care products that I recommend are made by the Xtend-Life Company which uses all natural ingredients in its creams and lotions.

]]>If you have read previous posts you will recognize two of the examples she quotes “Parabens, used as preservatives in many products, are being tested for possible cancer-causing effects, and phthalates, commonly found in fragrance and linked to hormone disruption”.
Equally disturbing is her discovery that “Chemicals that are banned from industrial manufacturing for safety reasons can be used in body care products”. Read more..

]]>The companies whose brands are big household names are well known because they advertise extensively in magazines and on TV. Of course advertising is expensive and you will often find that the costs of promotion may be more than the cost of the ingredients in the product itself.
Lesser known brands tend to promote their anti aging products in different ways and so are able to use more expensive ingredients without having to increase the final cost of their products.
So this is just a gentle reminder that you can’t judge a skin care product by its price alone. Just because it is the most expensive does not mean that it will be the most effective. That is why I recommend products from Xtend Life since they concentrate on the ingredients rather than the promotion.
