As we all know the answer is a definite yes. Someone who has smoked for several years is instantly recognizable by their sallow complexion and wrinkled skin. The efeect on the skin is often apparent after only ten years as a smoker and is irreversible.

There are a number of reasons why smoking leads to wrinkles. The blood vessels in the top layer of your skin are narrowed as a result of smoking cigarettes. This reduces the blood flow to your skin, depriving it of oxygen and important nutrients, such as vitamin A. In addition the collagen and elastin fibers which keep your skin firm and smooth are damaged by smoking. This leads to sagging skin and premature wrinkles.

Damage is also caused by the heat from burning cigarettes. In the same way that constant frowning can lead to a wrinkled forehead, pursing your lips when inhaling and squinting your eyes to keep out smoke will have the same effect in other areas of your face.

And it’s not only your face that is affected by the habit. A recent study found that smoking can cause increased wrinkling and skin damage to other areas of your body including the inner arms.

Good skin care begins with sun safety. Whether it is something as simple as age spots or as serious as skin cancer, the simplest and cheapest way to keep your skin healthy is to limit your exposure to the sun. Yet, Americans spend billions of dollars each year on skin care products that promise to erase wrinkles, lighten age spots, and eliminate itching, flaking, or redness.

As you age, your skin changes. It becomes thinner and loses fat, making your skin look less smooth. When your skin looks less plump, your veins and bones become more noticeable. You sweat less, which causes your skin to be drier. Also, your skin can take longer to heal from bruises or cuts as you get older. With all of these age-related changes, sunlight is a major contributing factor. You can delay these changes by avoiding prolonged and regular exposure to the sun.

Although nothing can completely undo sun damage, the skin sometimes can repair itself. So, it’s never too late to protect yourself from the harmful effects of the sun.

Sunlight is a major cause of the skin changes we think of as aging ? changes such as wrinkles, dryness, and age spots. Your skin does change with age. For example, you sweat less, leading to
increased dryness. As your skin ages, it becomes thinner and loses fat, so it looks less plump and smooth. It’s never too late to protect yourself from
the harmful effects of the sun. People who smoke tend to have more wrinkles than nonsmokers of the same age, complexion, and history of sun
exposure. It may be because smoking also plays a role in damaging ELASTIN proteins. Facial wrinkling increases with the amount of cigarettes
and number of years a person has smoked.
