The first step in dry skin care is to discover the cause. We are all familiar with the appearance of dry flaking skin which is both unsightly and can lead to irritation, but you need to find out what is causing the problem before you can decide what is the best way to treat the condition.

Our bodies produce a natural oil which helps our skin retain its moisture and it is the lack of this
natural oil that results in areas of dry skin. One of the main causes of dryness is excessive exposure to
the sun, but it can also be caused by cold weather conditions or a biting wind.

Other causes include washing too frequently with a harsh soap or using cosmetics made from synthetic chemicals. Some pharmaceutical drugs can be the reason why dry skin care is required. Equally you may be someone for whom this is their natural skin type.

Coping with the environmental factors of sun and cold is simple enough. Wear appropriate clothes to keep covered and use a sunscreen for your face. If you think that a drug or medicine you are taking might be responsible, consult your pharmacist for advice.

Once you have dealt with any aspects of your lifestyle that might have been the cause of your problem, you will need to establish a dry skin care routine. Regular gentle cleansing without using any soap on your face and then dry by gently patting with a towel. Then apply a moisturizing cream while your skin is still damp. Make sure the moisturizer you use is made from natural products such as shea butter or grapeseed oil.
